I had ~2 days over the weekend without air conditioning...the indoor temp stayed around 90° and my tank temps were close to that, some actually higher (original thread).

Unfortunately I did end up fish loss. I don't have a count and I can't say it was minimal or high...it was very upsetting and to me any loss is high

But there were some other interesting results:

-my betta who hasn't built a bubble nest in months made one that covered probably 75% of his 5g tank

-the GT and blue acara spawned again after a three month break

-another odd couple developed: my Cuban and severum

-Endler's and guppies dropped lots of fry

-both the sparkling gouramis and honey gouramis built bubble nests as well

Hi,
Sorry to hear of the loss of the A/C.. It sure makes life
in the "tropics" (or summer time) bearable.

Two "triggers" for spawning are a sudden surge of fresh
water, and an increase in water temperature.

Many fish spawn during a flooding, or the monsoon season.
At these times water fresh water inundates low lying areas
giving fish ample hiding places and food for their fry
ensuring the species survival.

Bettas used to live in nearly stagnent ponds and
streams. When it hits summer time, the water temperature
climb very high, and that stimulates the breeding urge.
In the summer time, insects breed, and fish food abound,
its the correct time for the fish to breed so that the
fry can take advantage of the ample food availble.

Not sure what to say but this is the second summer I've had my tanks set up @home with no AC running. Never had a problem either .
Without just theroizing too much I wonder if temp acclimation really makes that much of a difference. Obviously the tank temp isnt going to go from 72 or 84 or whatever it is straight to 90 in a few moments, and that the acclimation will be gradual enough that it shouldn't be a direct result but it could be part of it I suppose?.
Home stock are goldfish and barbs (indoor pond) unheated. 20 gallon with white skirts, WCMM and 2 remaining barbs. Planted, DIY CO2 little surface agitation.
Real sorry you lost some !

I always find it amazing that peoples fish die due to temp.

my tank has always been in AC, but my dads tank didnt have AC for 10 years, my house would be in the 90's every day, yet nothing ever really happened.

Also, when my house got flooded, our tank temps would go from 68 degrees to 79 in like an hour, and no fish really got sick or anything,

I'm sorry for your losses Theresa, I know it is hard even for one or two losses:#(

The fact that they have since decided to go, umh very happy and all, is a plus:%)

As far as temperatures on a tank go, I think there is an effect on the fish...I know I could never successfully keep fish when I lived in Presidio...Now whether it is because it was a 5 hour trip back from the lfs, or the fact that my house never dropped below 90*+ even at night, and that was with the air running constanly I think was my main component...

If it happens again, drop in some extra airstones, maybe it will help...best of luck, heidi
