I was wondering i use freshwater aquarium salt in my tanks, tbsp per five gallons, could i use mariene salt in there instead? And if no why not?

Nope. Marine salt is not the same as your normal aquarium salt. Marine salt mixes contain many different elements and compounds which are present in actual seawater, therefore mimicking the ocean. These mixes also usually buffer a tank's pH to 8.2 - 8.4, and harden the water.

I don't believe in using the "freshwater" aquarium salt unless possibly for treating sick animals, but that's another issue.

Salt is salt. Most "aquarium" salt, table salt, and SW aquarium salt, is all the same salt. The difference is, as books has mentioned, is the addatives. Most of the salt water mixes have extra addatives of calcium, trace elements, and other things. Especially the reef ready salts.

If you do not know what to look for, I would have to agree, don't use the salt water salt mixes.

Also depends on what kind of fish you have. Some fish are salt sensitive. I would say definitely not with cherry barbs....I killed 5 of 6 using salt. Gouramis are also know to not like salt, and I would no with angel fish, rams, and other known sensitive species.
