Hi,

I have these sinewy green fibrous strands growing on some of my plants.
They seem to be growing quite thick, mainly on my Elodea canadensis (Anacharis)
Common Name: OXYGEN WEED

and a bit on my Echinodorus bleheri (paniculatus).

Does anyone know

A) What it is ?
B) Is it harmfull to fish or plants?
C) How do I get rid of it?

Regards

Leon

Hi,
It sounds like you have a form of algae growing in
your tank.
This site describes the various types of algae, what
causes it, and how to eliminate or control it:

It sounds like Thread Algea. It is not harmful. It can be removed by twisting it around a little stick.

A lot of healthy plants help to stop the spread of the tread algaes.

It can also be caused if the tank is exposed to direct sunlight.

There are medications for removal but the main stream of thought is do not use them as they could cause other problems.

Hey I had that same form of algae my pleco just didnt want to bother with it the best solution is to remove it with a net or another object. I found that after a while my pleco started cleaning it out too. You could also try algae eating fish such as mollies.
