Crushing up flakes should be just fine for these fish.
A Pellet wont work because it is too large.
Just crush the flake into small peices like you would for fry.

Threadfins do have slightly different colors in each fish. Some may have a greenish tinge to their fins and some will be very pink or red. I have one that has a very bright pink outline to his tail and the rest of a darker purplish color. They aren't really color variations but just differences in each fish. Also the lighting can really bring out 1 color over another. Do a google picture search for threadfin rainbow or Iriatherina werneri and you'll see what I mean. Some almost look like they are in all pastel colors, some are blue, some are gold, some are red.... Also the more different sources you buy them from the more color difference your likely to get.

All rainbowfish are schoolers preferring groups of 6 or more. I have however kept 3 rainbows alone and they seemed to do ok.
I would still want to keep these little guys in a school though they look the best in a school.

like any rainbowfish they are a a midwater to top water swimmer.
if you have a pair of rams and nothing else in your 29g, you could easily pop in a school of like 8-12 threadfins, possibly more. I would go by eyeball, adding a few at a time.
Threadfins would be able to eat ram eggs, but it is incredibly unlikely the rams would go near them, and once the babies hatch, after a day or 3 of growth the babies will be too big for the threadfins to eat.
I would say it is a very good solution for a breeding tank.

Hi paddy,
as far as I know they are only available in their natural color pattern, show in the picture.
I have only ever seen them in that color, though the pic
doesnt do them justice, they are much more reddish colored.
The females have shorter fins, and are a nice goldeny bronze color.
They have the same requirements as most rainbowfish:
adaptable to most PH's, like temps in the mid 70s to low 80s, and are schooling.
They only grow to about 1.5 inches around there,
very active energetic little guys.
Very easy to keep.
They would thrive if fed live or frozen daphnia and brine shrimps as a supplement, and crush the flake up nice and fine for them.

They are $12 a fish at the store nearest me. I ordered them online to get them at $4 each for 4 males and then bought 2 females for $8 each from a store 1hour away. They are not overly difficult to breed but being such small fish even the adults can be hard to feed. They are too small for the smallest new life spectrum pellets I could find. Their throats are smaller than their mouths and almost anything you feed them has to be crushed or ground up. The fry will need extremely small food. I'm trying out this foodhttp://www.brineshrimpdirect.com/other_goldpearl_particle.html. So far the 200-300 micron size seems good for adults. They like it better than flakes and maybe even better than frozen food. I think NLS small fish pellets are around 500-600microns and they have a bit of trouble eating it.

here in beautiful BC all the time at around 5.99 per fish
or 4 for 20.

i never understood why the rainbow fishes are so expensive at lfs. like around 10 for a aus rainbow.

i have a few types of rainbows and i like the neon rainbows. i would think that the reds get to large for a 10 or 5G.
