Loaches don't have to be kept in schools but like to have company of their own kind. While larger groups are preferred, I've successfully kept them in pairs and trios. IME though both queens and yoyo will eat MTS.

A dwarf puffer would help. They may occasionally take out a mts, but they will focus on the smaller snails. I have never had a problem with them nipping at other fish, but some people claim they do.

Yes some cichlids do enjoy the occassional snack of snails, or at least mine always did

And the puffers, will eat snails, but aren't they brackish and supposed to be kept in a single species tank?

Dwarf puffers are STRICTLY fresh water. They hardly get over an inch long. They leave my glass catfish, von rio tetras, harlequin rasboras, dwarf frogs, white clouds, cochus blue tetras, striped raphael catfish, and blue rams entirely alone( 3 different tanks, 2 with dwarf puffers). The only thing they bother is the snails.

Lots of people eat snails, especially French people. They taste pretty good actually with lots of garlic butter and mushroom caps and cheese.

Applesnail.net has a page of apple snail recipes too.

And a random picture I found amusing:

EDIT: btw, here is a good *on topic* link you might find helpful from applesnail.net about snail eradication. Very cool site in general, who knew there was so much to learn about snails?
