i resently got my old 10 gallon out of its box because i wanna put some fish in it. i want something with character as the center piece and then maybe a school of tetra's i don't care if it is planted because i can live with one tank not planted. all your thought would be greatly appreciated

i was thinking dwarf Gourami, clown loaches or plecos (don't know wat kind)

For a 10g, I'd say the dawrf gourami is your best bet along with a school of 8, maybe 10 smaller tetras of the same species. Personally I like glo lites, cardinals, and black neons.

Clown loaches and plecos get too large for a 10g.

If you do get a dwarf gourami, make sure there are some plants, live or fake, for it to hide in so it feels more secure.

Erm, I've never heard that they prefer pairs, in fact males (the majority of LFSs only carry males, females are hard to come by) will often get into squabbles when put together. I would think they'd be especially e to fighting in such tight quarters. When I had 2, however, they were in a 55g so they each had their own end of the tank. In other words: It's possible, but you'd be overstocking your tank, so regular water changes and heavy filtration would be mandatory. You'd also be taking a risk of stressing the fish.
