5 nickel size calico koi angels
3 pearl gouramis
school of 8 to 10 cardinal tetras
school of 8 cory mellini

55g freshwater - am I pushing it - I know the angels will grow - but gouramis will frequent top - cories will be on the bottom - should leave plenty of swimming space for angels - I could drop the cardinal tetras but thought it might be good to add some color to the tank - (jason p. - would welcome your thoughts) - thanks Dan

The tank seems a little overstocked considering the potential sizes of the angelfish and the gouramis, so leave out at least one gourami. They are usually fine in male/female pairs, and can also be kept alone without problems. The angelfish should be okay, since your tank is of a decent size.

By the way, I noticed that you picked a somewhat uncommon Corydoras species. Are C. melini widely available in your area?

You could do with 10 Cardinal tetras. Why 5 angels? 5 in a 55, IMO is pushing it a little. Why not go with about 3-4?

So I would think

10 Cardinal Tetras
3-4 Angels
8 Corydoras melini
1 Pearl gourami

sirbooks - thanks for the quick response - the school of corys are already in the tank and doing quite nicely - my lfs is amazing and has a wide selection of catfish - the pandas were an option but from what I've read and seen posted are somewhat fragile - I wanted a different look than just the emerald or bronze cats - so I went with the bandit corys - the activity on the bottom of the tank is non-stop -

Nope, it doesn't matter at all. They are both pretty peaceful as far as tankmates are concerned.

Yep, your lfs must be pretty well-stocked with cories if they have C. melini. I know of only one store that has them, and I haven't seen them on the 'Net.

Actually, Angels get big enough to eat cardinals, so I wouldn't recommend doing that. Pearls also prefer more of their species around...

I would go with 10 Cardinal Tetras, 4 Angels, 8 Corydoras melini & 2 (pair) Pearl Gourami's.
I think that if you keep up with the water changes & take care of your tank well, you can have it a bit overstocked. You can replace the 10 Cardinals with 8 Rummynose Tetra's if you like.
Lucky you that you have the Corydoras melini.

I agree with that setup:
10 Cardinal Tetras
3-4 Angels
8 Corydoras melini
1 Pearl gourami

You can keep cardinals with angels, just add the cardinals first and give them time to grow, then add the angels. My angel doesnt even touch the cardinals and he is 4 inches.

Yeah I suppose that could work. Just watch out when your angels get big!

Good luck.
