My 10g is not as great as Keith's...but here's a picture:

I like cardinals better than neons...they are prettier.[/font]

In my 15gal i have 2 platies, and they are really friendly.
Everyone in my house loves them, mum, me(secondary school) brother (primary school) They also eat the algea, and are very 'pet like' Get a couple of males, i have an orange and a yellow, (i don't know their proper name) And they are crazy :%) Very intrasting

BNF

Oh Yeah, and i am a beginner, they are v. easy to look after

You could always take her to a lfs and see what she likes and how you can work with what she likes not with what we think

I wouldn't put swordtails in a ten. One of my friends has three in her 20 gallon tall and I think they look a little cramped. I think her females are around 3" and her male is -much- bigger.
If the tank is going to be really well-filtered, how about five or six neons and two or three male guppies of different colors? You'd have a bunch of blue and red fish swimming together and then a few splashes of yellow or black or purple or orange or ...

Guppies come in a -ton- of colors.

you could put a pair of swortails with 2-4 neons or cardinals and say 2 pairs of guppies.

Iv heard that plants in a tank are a hobby within a hobby

True...but there are easy to manage plants.

First you would have to upgrade the lighting, if it came with an incandescent bulb(s)...it has kind of a reddish orange tint. If the bulbs are screw in then you can find screw in compact fluorescent bulbs.

After that..plants.

For a 10g I would suggest...Java Fern (on a piece of driftwood), an Anubias Nana Petite, Dwarf Sagittaria for the foreground (that's what I have), maybe some stem plants such as Ludwigia Repens, Bacopa Caroliniana, and Rotala Indica. With the stem plants, you would have to cut the tops off and replant them every so often because with the right light they will grow pretty fast. Crypts are also good...they grow pretty slow and stay small. Crypt wendtii red is what I have in my 10g on the left.
Java Fern, Anubias, Crypts, and the Dwarf Sag are all easy to manage. You just plant them and let them grow. The java fern and anubias need to be placed on the wood or a rock. You don't have to add fertilizers or anything. The only work would be if you got stem plants and all they need is cutting.

I personally think real plants look so much better. My 10g was my first planted tank and now I am planting every tank I set up. I think you will be very happy with a planted tank.

Keithgh has Cardinals and a male Betta in an 11 gallon setup. Ask to see his pictures for ideas!

8 Cardinals and a male Betta should wow your little girl. Only thing is, you'll be running pretty close to the stocking limits with that collection, so you should get them piecemeal and build up your biofilter accordingly. Not least because your male Betta will probably appreciate modest currents instead of a surf effect, so you'll probbly want to drive your undergravel filter with an air pump and airstone in the uplift tube instead of a powerhead, unless you can get a powerhead that won't blast the water around like a jacuzzi!

Maybe you can have 8 Neons & a Betta or something like this. Small fish that don't breed much are also a good idea.

My parents guppy tank turned out real nice (they had to upgrade after awhile because they wanted to add tetras) They multipy fast though!

Heavily plant the 10 gal and get 4 guppies:
1x Male, 3x Female.

My parents had a male cobra-tailed and all the females were deep colored fancy! There offspring are so pretty! We got: Pinkish-Cobras (my lil sis loved those) and Really colorful fancys with big, black polkadots on there tails! I wish I had a pic

My son loves and picked out our cherry barbs himself. He loves the boys...they are so red. Harlequin rasboras would also look neat in a tank like that. Platies are interesting too, and are a little less prolific in reproducing that guppies....but not much less.

You could just get some girl guppies or platies and then breed them later when the 60 is available.

I wouldn't put female guppies in a ten. If you get them from a mix-gender tank at the pet store, chances are, they'll probably be pregnant. Sticking to one school of small tetras and a betta or some male guppies or sparkling gouramis would probably be your best bet. They tiny, fast-moving fish will keep the child interested in the tank, in my experience. Cherry barbs are pretty nice, too, and the males are -very- handsome.
Whichever way you go, have fun!
