Hmm... dwarf puffers can be nasty lil things. I adore them and intend to make a species tank for them in the future. Generally, they're best kept by in a species tank. They have the unfortunate habit of liking to bite the tails and fins off of other fish.

I've suggested cories... they will DEFINITELY give movement to the tank. If you get a school of six or eight, you'll have fun watching them.

You could either go with a school of tetras, rasboras or small barbs. If you like more individuality, perhaps livebearers (just be warned that they WILL have tons of babies if you get both sexes, you can get JUST males for color and a controlled population ).

I've got female bettas in my twenty gallon. HOWEVER... I've been *exceedingly* lucky to find compatible girls. Some females can be just as aggressive as their male counterparts. However, they have the most personality of any fish I own, including male bettas.

For centerpiece fish, perhaps a smaller gourami or something like a ram... don't quote me on rams, I know nothing about them, except that people suggest them as centerpiece fish for some tanks.

Personally, that's what I would do... a school of cories, a school of some small colorful fish, and then a centerpiece fish or two. The cories would give you entertainment, the tetras (or whatever you chose) give you color and movement, and the centerpiece fish would be a nice dramatic touch.

However, you could go about setting up your tank in various ways. Do you want schooling fish or more individual fish?

I know I mentioned most of this in my PM, but figured I'd just repeat it for the benefit of others who post here.

sounds good HCA but would it still work if i was to change the gourami for a betta .

also what could i have instead of corries as im not to keen on botom feeders to be honest.

so im thinking of either having 1 male betta /2 dwarf gourami as the centre peice fish. soguessing i would stock around them or him . hopefully il get there with ur help .

also would it be possible to have 2 small schools of about 6-8 with the betta or dwarf gourami.

Hmm... could do a color scheme type thing... get 8-10 cardinal tetras (small neons can become snacks for bettas), a M/F pair of cherry barbs, and then a blue betta (or gourami, for that matter ). Against a nice green planted tank, those colors would be stunning.

You could do the same with any color combination... and bettas come in so many colors, you could find the perfect complimentary color.

If you're going to try a betta in this setup, I'll give you an important bit of advice... have a separate small tank ready to setup in case it doesn't work. I've got super sweet bettas and ones that would never work out in a community tank. (For example, I have one short tailed betta that ripped through my twenty gallon community tank, scared my guppy girls to death in my ten gallon tank, and now lives in solitary confinement in a two gallon kritter keeper.)

If you go with a male betta, be warned that they are generally NOT compatible with other labyrinth fish (paradise fish, gouramis, etc). Also, you'd be looking for fish that are NOT fin nippers and are big enough that your betta won't eat them. You also don't want anything with long fins that a betta would see as a potential rival (male guppies and the like aren't a good choice).

Your best bet is to go to your fish store and look around... what fish catches your attention? Take paper with you and write them down. Bring your notes back here and we'll help you figure out how to stock. It's easier to help you out if we know what you have in your area and what you like.

1 betta or 1 dwarf gourami
8 harlie rasboras/or/ glowlights
2 cherry barbs
8 neons/or/ cardinals

bottom feeders arent nessasary- if you want something to help pick up lost food on the bottom, and dont want cories- go for a snail, or large ( not ghost) shrimp- bettas LOVE ghosties

in the local stores we have most of the comon freshwater fish u can think of . so i think its just up to me to search for a centre peice or decide on the betta or gourami option then work round that. also as for the colour scheme thing kitten .im thinking if i do go with a betta i ould want either the marble or green infact anything but blue/red cos iv seen loads of them but not seen may of the other colours apart from in 1 lfs which has im guessing most of the colours available . so what would be a rare colour to get .

thanks all ur really helping
