There are two types of Stonefish you might be thinking about...

Though both are behave and even appear somewhat alike, both species are completely unrelated fish. Stonefish in the general, most common sense is a saltwater species, a type of scorpionfish that uses camouflage to look like a stone. They're known for being quite venomous as well, and are definitely not a fish you want to step on. The Freshwater Stonefish is actually a species of Toadfish; a few Toadfish are brackish, and the Freshwater Toadfish is a fish that is able to handle salinities even as low as freshwater (though brackish is best). The Freshwater Stonefish isn't venomous, though.

i've always heard that the FW stonefish a.k.a. bullrout WAS semi-poisonous and the FW stones get big, up to 1ft, so a large tank will be needed, they are also quite aggresive, as they will eat anything and everything that they can fit into their mouths, sand substrate should be used, since they like to burrow also
