This may seem a silly question, but how far should you fill up your tank, mines 24 inches tall ??

If you have a cover, than I'd say up to 23 inches. It really doesn't matter as long as you give it some room. The only exception is a betta bowl or a tank that doesn't have a cover. Then you might have some jumping fish problems.

I fill my tank up really high (so that the water is almost touching the glass top), because if I do it much lower than that, the filter starts making splashing noises as the water evaporates.

I typically fill my tanks with covers to just above the top trim from the exterior and then top off between water changes to keep it there. This is for appearance sakes and also keeps down any hardwater deposits from forming where they can be seen

Its a matter of preference, really. If you have live plants you may wish to raise the level to the filter return so that the water doesn't splash or agitate the water when it hits. :88)

It is certainly not a silly question that is how we learn.

You will find it will depend on the tank and the owners choice. I fill my tank 5ft to the underside of the glass that supports my glass top. Which is about 20mm/- 3/4ins.

My next tank for a Betta will be about 75mm-3ins from the top of the glass as there will be no glass top.

If it has a lid, I fill it halfway up the seal piece that supports the lid, sometimes a bit higher as I'm using a python and running sometimes doesn't work fast enough, sometimes a little lower...but that is about it...not a stupid question at all, trust me:%)ehdii

Same.

Ahhh the sweet sounds of silence.... love a *silent* tank.

as eluded to in an earlier post, suface agitation is key in an enclosed aquatic system. Surface agitaiton promotes gas exchange, and gas exchange promotes a healthy aquarium. Ideally, if you don't have a planted tank, you want the water to flow out of your filter, and straight across the water's surface, providing maximum agitation.

I fill mine as close to the top of the aquarium as I can. That way by the time the water evaporates it's time for another water change anyway.
