It really doesn't matter as long as you give it some room. The only exception is a betta bowl or a tank that doesn't have a cover. Then you might have some jumping fish problems. - DJ :88) |

This is for appearance sakes and also keeps down any hardwater deposits from forming where they can be seen ![]() ![]() |

If you have live plants you may wish to raise the level to the filter return so that the water doesn't splash or agitate the water when it hits. :88) |

You will find it will depend on the tank and the owners choice. I fill my tank 5ft to the underside of the glass that supports my glass top. Which is about 20mm/- 3/4ins. My next tank for a Betta will be about 75mm-3ins from the top of the glass as there will be no glass top. Posts: 2623 Kudos: 2462 Votes: 337 Registered: 29-Mar-2003 ![]() | If it has a lid, I fill it halfway up the seal piece that supports the lid, sometimes a bit higher as I'm using a python and running sometimes doesn't work fast enough, sometimes a little lower...but that is about it...not a stupid question at all, trust me:%)ehdii "I've got a great ambition to die of exhaustion rather than boredom." Surface agitaiton promotes gas exchange, and gas exchange promotes a healthy aquarium. Ideally, if you don't have a planted tank, you want the water to flow out of your filter, and straight across the water's surface, providing maximum agitation. |
