Hi everyone, i was just wondering if a 150 watt heater is to much for a 33 gallon aquarium? It is on as low as it can go and the temperature still goes to 88F. It came with the aquarium so i assumed it would be fine, which it was until two weeks ago.

thanks for your help,

There is one possibility it has a faulty thermostat. Take it back and get them to check it for you.

I have had a heater do that before too. It is most likely that the heater is broken. Return it if you still can. That heater should be just fine for that tank. Also, sometimes the thermometer that you use to get your readings with can be off. My honest guess would be a faulty heater though. Chances are, with it being faulty, even if you managed to get it to be a decent temperature for yourself, you would probably, as I did, notice a spike in your electric bill. Good luck with it!

Welcome to FP

Sounds faulty to me as if the contact points are sticking. I think I'd return it and try to get a replacement.

Hi Addicted to Fish
If possible pay a little extra for a heater with a warranty, (Sera) or similar and check your heater is compatible with your electricy supply, if not you may be able to get a power pack to stablise your power supply. Welcome to Fishkeeping. Muss
