I tried searching for these online and I've gotten sizes from 2.5" to 4" as well as conflicting info on how many to keep together. Do rainbowfish need to be in groups? Anyone know the correct size of Melanotaenia lacustris? At least I think that's the right scientific name. My 55g is reading under 10ppm nitrates and there is plenty of swimming room. I want to add rams or rainbowfish hopefully tomorrow.

Beautiful fish

Yes, they like to be in groups of 5-6, and only get to be around 3.5-4 inches, making them perfect for the medium sized to large aquarium. Active swimmers and always hungry, these fish will add a nice blue splash to your aquarium pretty lil guys, i have a few in my tank, along with other rainbowfish. They all school together and keep everyone busy

I recommend them to be kept with larger leaved plants only, mine tore up all my rotala indica in a matter of days!

Well I decided I don't really have room for a school of 4" fish and I like my plants. I got some blue tetras though. I'm going to move the rams in the smaller community tank over to the 55g and see if a little school of threadfins will fit. The turquoise were very pretty. I need another tank.
