My zebra dainos had fry and i wanted to give my turtle something different than turtle pellets so i threw in the fry. Now a few months later and they are all best friends. They swim around the turtle's mouth and he doesnt even eat them. Even when he is hungry and hell go around the tank looking for something to eat he wont even bother the fish. He might chase after them sometimes but even if he gets one cornered he doesnt even eat them. I love my red ear because he eats out my hand but i dont want to say to much about him being that this s fish site. So make the right choice. I say yes but alot of people might say no |

However, a turtle can not be put in a fish tank. Turtles and fish require different habitats. A turtle needs a land portion to go on. Many fish would not appriciate this. You can put fish into this kind of habitat, but only if you understand that the turtle's needs come first. I would choose hardy fish like zebra danios. Neons and small tetras would be fine, becasue yours is only a baby. However, I would be worried as the turtle grows up. I would suggest that you put the babies with the adult as soon as you can. And where are you getting the babies, if you are not careful, you could get into some trouble with the cops. I would not suggest you talk about owning illigal turtles in a public message forum. - DJ :88) |

And for 50 bucks a pop too! Do you really think the cops are out looking for illegal turtles? I think they have better things to do, and as for the animal and wildlife officers- last time I saw one of those he was spending his work hours fishing! I have never heard of anyone being "busted" for selling sliders, nor of anyone even being interested in the fact that they are illegal to sell. In fact my LFS said to me "The amount of money I make selling Sliders would more than make up for any Fine I may or may not get, so why do I care? As long as there is demand, I will sell them, and they are locally bred, so there is a large supply." And as for fish, well I have seen sliders eat goldfish, and they are a turtle after all. The key is though- they will eat the fish if they can catch them, and turtles are too quick, so just make sure your fish are quicker. Here in Canada, each province has its own laws. In Alberta and BC, for instance, sale of red-eared sliders (of any size) is prohibited, and I can list a number of shops and occasions that seizures and fines have been levied, but for the most part, the authorities typically have more important things with which to occupy their time. Sale of baby red-eared sliders is far less common in Canada than in the US, since it is highly prohibited to import them from outside Canada (they are farmed in the US, but not here, although there are 3-4 small-scale breeders in Ontario and Manitoba). |

If they can catch it they'll eat it, there's a few that have grown to big to eat which do great at cleaning....but few make it to anywhere near that size... I've seen mine eat the crayfish I added for cleaning purposes. I would second what has been mentioned above, tutrles should not be put with fish, their very dirty animals. No matter the filtration Not to mention the habitat and dietary differences...But i would advise turtles, great pets Last edited by mr_cichlid at 28-Mar-2005 12:39 |
