hi, just bought a 55usg today and want to set it up soon. my problem is that my basement floor was concrete and very unlevel so we had it smoothed over and then tiled over the concrete. what i am facing now is and unlevel tiled floor. it is not really bad but if i just set the tank it will be off by atleast an inch or two. what are the best ways to level out a tank on and unlevel floor.

really you need a wedge to fill in the gaps but it is very hard to know what to use, i have used carboard but once you add the water the weight changes the cardboard flattens and you have a wonky tank again. my hex tank is in a corner were the floor sort of runns down in the corner, it is on a VERy thick bit of cardboard and it took a fair bit of filling and emptying to get it level.

there is no way you move the tank to a level part of the floor? my bed room is laid out around the "flat bits" of the floor.

or build a low wooden platform to stand the stand on? make the stand base so it fits to the wonkyness of the floor but has a level top? sort of like a gaint wedge...... i know that sounds mad. i really am no good at explaining.

on the other hand when i have freaked about such things, i have been told it doesn't matter???

i am sure some one who can explain things better will come to your rescue.

good luck

A lopsided tank leads to an uneven distribution of weight in the tank and can crack the tank or even break the side it is leaning towards. Maybe cut a few bricks and use them as little wedges to hold it up?...or stack a few more tiles under it.

Do not fill it if it remains lopsided.

You may be able to get pieces of thin angle cut wood called SHIMS wherever lumber/home building supplies are avail.

I don't know what your tank stand is made of but I know my metal one can be adjusted (only found this out because one corner is a bit off) If it's made of wood, and you felt confident enough you couls sand the bottom of the stand to compensate for the unlevelness of the floor...if it were me though I'd find another place to set up the tank, or find someone to level out the floor by repaving it if that is possiblebest of luckheidi

problem is that i am out of space so this is the only place for this one to go. i have played the cardboard game before but my biggest tank was only 29usg, this new one is 55usg and i don't need that much water on my floor.

the floor reminds me of the ocean just small waves through out the hole basement. very subtle but enough to throw the tank off 2 or 3 inches.

I would use thin pieces of iron or something similar, so when you fill it up, it don't break.
Don't leave it lopsided, as the weight of the water will break the tank, due to the water pressure.
