The parameters are going crazy so I'm trying to get things back to normal. Keith suggested I tear the tank down and clean the gravel really good. The problem is I have 8 neons, 2 ottos, and a male betta in there. The betta could go to a spare 5g hex and the ottos to my 55g, but I am afraid to put the neons in the 55g because of my angel. She is still small (4" tall and 3" long) but may try to eat or chase my neons. So I am thinking about getting a 20g long. I will put the neons in there and add friends later. I will get a divider for my 10g after I get everything cleaned, and put my 2 male bettas in there and get rid of my 5g minibow. That seemed like a great plan...but then I thought about cycling the new tank and how I would do that since neons aren't that hardy. Well if I plant the new 20g good, put some gravel from my 55g, and put the filter from my 10g on there, maybe the neons will be ok. They are now in a 10g with readings of 3ppm ammonia and 0.25ppm of nitrite...so maybe they will be ok in a new tank. Planted tanks don't really "cycle" like normal. What do you all think? Does it seem like a good plan? It sounds good in my head...:%) |

I will check them out on here though. The reason I am asking the questions about the neons going into a new tank...is that I really need to do it quick. I am going to plant it so that the ammonia and such won't get high enough to harm the fish. I want to put the neons in there as soon as I can. Do you think that will work? |

Anad every thing should be fine in fact near perfect. But I have noticed my Betta chasing the neons alot lately and have thought about taking him out of there and into his own tank. I am not sure how he would be on his own again though. I really don't want more neons..they are not really exciting. I thought if I only move them to the 20g then I could maybe get a school of Harlequin Rasboras later on...as I've always wanted them. Also I would add a small school of cories. But adding fish is months away (besides the neons). If I put some gravel from my 55g along with new gravel and put plants in there...would that work? And my filter. Could I transfer the neons in there maybe a day after setting up the tank? I really don't want to get rid of the 5g because I just set it up and planted it...but it is a pain to clean. My gravel vac won't reach so it doesn't work and I have to use my python so I end up taking out almost all the water. I think putting the 2 bettas in the divided 10g would be better. It is much easier to clean...if only I would commit to cleaning regularly. Also the 5g is bowing a little. It is a minibow, but it is stretching out towards the front..beyond where the hood fits (if that makes sense). It just seems better to me to put the neons in the 20g, and the bettas in the divided 10g. I will make sure to clean the gravel good in the 10g and get the snails out before I add the bettas. Hopefully that will make the parameters somewhat normal. |

I would also add a good Bio starter to give the good bacteria a new start. Also you could use some Melafix to help the fish settle in. A Clown Loach will keep you clean from Snails & Snail eggs. http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/s8xi5heh/my_photos http://www.geocities.com/s8xi5heh/classic_blue.html http://groups.yahoo.com/group/buzaqq/ http://www.deathbydyeing.org/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |
GirlieGirl8519![]() ![]() Fish Master *Malawi Planter* Posts: 1468 Kudos: 1029 Votes: 35 Registered: 25-Mar-2005 ![]() | Ahh...I had just decided to put the Betta in the 20g also. Hmm...now I will have to think about it again. If I divided the 10g for the 2 bettas...would one filter be ok? I will try to find a divider with the small "flow" holes so water will flow to both sides. |
jasonpisani![]() ![]() ![]() *Ultimate Fish Guru* Posts: 5553 Kudos: 7215 Votes: 1024 Registered: 24-Feb-2003 ![]() | If you have flow passing through the holes in the divider, then 1 Filter will be fine. http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/s8xi5heh/my_photos http://www.geocities.com/s8xi5heh/classic_blue.html http://groups.yahoo.com/group/buzaqq/ http://www.deathbydyeing.org/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |
