The two ideas I'm split between are killies and shellies.

With killies I'd just have to buy some plants for the tank and I'd try to get some eggs from Aquabid. These are a few I've looked at, for an idea of what I'm interested in:

http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?fwkillifishe&1113567660

http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?fwkillifishe&1113569811

http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?fwkillifishe&1113648627

Shellies would probably have to be purchased shellies online as well; there's only one lfs here that I haven't checked yet. I'd get Neolamprologus brevis. I'd also have to switch the tank over to sand and buy shells.

Since neither are available locally I don't think I'd have a problem with stores buying them from me or taking them for store credit, although that's not my reason for keeping them.

So which would you choose, and why?

Thanks

I'd go with the N. brevis. They have more personality and are more fun to keep in my opinion than killifish, and breeding them would be awesome. Wouldn't you just love to see a cloud of fry zoom out of a shell come feeding time? Besides, the brevis would live longer than killifish, and would give you years of enjoyment.

As someone who's kept both - don't get me wrong, killies are cute. But unless you have a "collect them all" mentality, they're soooo boring. You like cichlids, right? The Blue acara, Green Terror, etc? Cichlids are fun to observe, fun to spawn, they raise their young, they change their environment to suit their liking, and a few years down the road they're as fascinating and unpredictable as the day you got them.

And, they're gorgeous, especially males. The males' ventral fins and some fin tips get long and flowy, like this guy, who's still fairly young and has some fin growth yet to come:

But I'd say go with sunspots - they're merely cute as juvies but breeding pairs go dark chocolate with a bright yellow belly, absolutely drop-dead gorgeous.

Theresa I would go with the killies myself. They seem so beautiful and exotic

Out of the three you showed, I would go with #3. I love the blue/lavendar/pink combination, and those fins are just beautiful

Now Theresa I will fully admit I don't know anything about them, but it would be worth it to learn about them just to be able to get them...

My choice would be the Aphyosemion elberti Ntui. They are stunning. And if that guy can ship internationally, I might avail myself of some of those

Voted for shellies
Jdubs might have some multis in the near future .

although 6 seems to me a tiny bit small for them ...

Although I really like killi fish, I have to vote for the shellies, especially if you're looking for something with some activity. Killies are beautiful fish and I have kept several in the past, they really aren't as entertaining.

Definitely brevis. I'm getting a 5 gallon with a pair myself in a couple of weeks. We could be brevis buddies!

...I'm also getting some multis in a few months. Babel, we could be multi mates!

although 6 seems to me a tiny bit small for them

Actually, a 6 gives a pair of small shellies just enough room to live happily.

Besides, if you get killies, what are you going to do with the other 17 - 19 eggs? Seems like an awful waste.

I've kept several cichlid species and these are one of the most intesting, IMO...I think both would be very cool but the Brevis are tops
Mine are the same as the pic posted by Little Mousling, If you can find them I say get the Sunspot Brevis
