55g tank ~ $0

55g stand ~ $0

2 heaters ~ $0

2 24" lights and hoods ~ $0

Aquaclear 110 filter ~ $0

Notice that I didn't mention gravel, decorations, live plants, nets, stress coat, meds, another filter, food, and oh yeah FISH! So between that and all the small tanks in my room, probably thousands :%)

Let's see, the Panda Fun Palace™ is now over 10 years old. In that time It's seen some fish changes, so let's see:

Aquarium itself - about £25
Stand - £40 (PVC coated wrought iron job that's built to withstand a nuclear strike, gives you a hernia lifting it)
Hood - £20
Heater - £0 becuse it was a present from a fellow aquarist
Lighting system - £16 for the starter box, and factor in £20 for the tubes it's used in 10 years
UGF - £8
Powerhead - £20
Gravel - £2
Bogwood - £15
Plants - probably over £50, but I've recouped some of that selling surplus cuttings back to the LFS
Fish - Around £200 total
Food over 10 years - £300 (including regular batches of live food)
Electricity costs - I'd estimate around £5 a month max, but over 10 years that comes to ... yeep, £600 ...

Breeding aquarium:

Tank - £20
Stand - £0 (goes on the bottom tier of the existing one)
Hood - £20
Lighting - £16 for the starter unit, £7 for the tube
Heater - £13
UGF - £8
Air pump - £8
Tubing - £2
Gravel - £2
Bogwood - £3 for a lump you could use to bludgeon an elephant to death with
Plants - £0 because they were all surplus offshoots from the rampant growth in the Panda Fun Palace™
Fish - £0 because they were all Mata Hari's offspring!
Food - I'd say about £25 in 6 months (including live food costs) partly because they share the flakes with the Panda Fun Palace™ occupants
Electricity - same as above, about £5 a month max, so that's £30 in electricity costs so far.

So if everything is factored in, I've spent something like £1,500 over 10 years. Not bad going given that some people have spent that just setting up the aquarium ...

EDIT : if you want serious spending on fish, try Ad Konings, the Cichlid man. He's bought a new house just for fish tanks. And he's put a whopping 250 Cichlid tanks in there. He's probably spent over a quarter of a million dollars just on those, never mind the aquaria that occupy the house he lives in ...

OK This could be interesting...I'm only going to figure it out for the 125, as the others I have truly lost track of and wouldn't want to try to go back and figure it out at the moment:%)

Glass Tank/Stand/Hood $400.00
Light Bulbs (2@15) $ 30.00
Canister filter lft side $ 75.00
Canister filter rt side $ 65.00
Loss of sanity for rt canister $ priceless
Substrate (6@ 12.00) $ 72.00 this can't be
Drift Wood Center Piece $ 40.00
Drift Wood that won't sink $ 15.00
Air pumps (2@10.00) $ 20.00
Tubing $ 2.00
Air Stones (5@2.50) $ 7.50
Anarcharis $ 40.00
Red Plant died in a week :%) $ 15.00
Grass Like plants $ 25.00
Total not counting fish $811.50

And here I was wondering where my income tax return went I'm not even going to try and guess how much I've spent on fish, water conditioners, food and such%)!

And to think the doctor asked if there was anything I was addicted toI told him no

The price of my enjoyment in watching them and relaxing to the antics in the tank priceless!!!

For my current setups, I would estimate it at just over a thousand. Through the years, I couldn't even begin to guess.

I know I kept most of the receipts when I first started my tanks... I figure in one year I spend about a grand... and this was with:

20 gallon long
10 gallon
5 gallon minibow
6 x 2 gallon
4 x 1 gallon

The ten gallon was a free tank, but I paid for everything else that goes in the tanks, etc.

I've now got a 12 gallon as well, another freebie tank, but another tank I've sunk some money into, of course.

For those people who think fish keeping is an expensive hobby, talk to anyone who flies remote control planes. I bet my dad has put several times the amount of money I've spent on my fish into his planes.

well, my 75g tank alone including all lights, tank, stand, fish, filters, etc, as well as a 90g tank that leaks,
cost me about $2500 CAD.
My 25g tank, cost about $400 CAD
My 10g tank cost about $150 CAD
This does not include fertilizers, foods, meds, water conditioners, etc. This is just the cost of hardware, fish, substrates, and plants.

Couldn't say

A lot of what I've done on the tanks have been DIY so you'd have to figure in labor expenses....I do know it cant possibly have spent as much on 4 tanks and one pond in three plus years as I did on scuba diving in two hours time.

This is one of the questions that I think most people don't even want to start to think about. I know that I don't! I am just a poor college kid with a bad fish habbit. I couldn't imagin how poor I would be if I was one of thoughs drinking college kids too! So just for a number to give out.......lets say way the heck too much!!

Wow, that's a scary question

My first tank was a 29g kit but I upgraded the filter. I purchased everything separately for my 30g and 75g, those have oak stands. Everything separate for the 20g, it shares a dual metal stand with the 29g. My three 10g were kits but I used the filters that came with them for smaller tanks and upgraded. 6g Eclipse, 5g Mini-Bow, bunches of those 2g hex tanks, lighting, lots of back up stuff...then of course gravel, Flourite, chemicals, filter media, driftwood, plants, and of course the fish...

My 30 gallon has already cost me nearly $1000 and it's not even stocked with fish yet. It's the first tank I've set up after doing a lot of research and wanting to do things right, and I made mistakes along the way. I also bought an acrylic tank, which with shipping can be very, very expensive. However, I bought all of my equipment from That Fish Place (http://www.thatpetplace.com/MainPro/IndexFish.aspx) and spent far less, even including shipping, than I would have if I had bought everything at a local pet store.

On the other hand, now that I've made a bunch of mistakes, my estimate for a new 65 gallon aquarium is only $600. I find it amusing I can spend significantly less on an aquarium twice as big.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

I figured this out once. My 125g was $1000 and My 75g was $500. I bought everything online so it was a lot cheaper. None of this includes fish, decorations, or or miscellanous supplies.

in my opinion you can't think of how much you've spent...fish keeping is one of the most expensive hobbies around...expensive but rewarding...i've spent thousands of dollars...and that amount will just keep on rising...
