Any ideas whether a computer desk will hold a 20g long aquarium? Before I filled it with anymore water I thought maybe I should ask. It looks sturdy enough..... but I don't want to risk flooding Chris apartment with 20g of water if possible. Not to mention I hate cleaning up glass.

20 gallons of water weighs about 75 kg, or 170 lbs. then you have to consider all the things inside the tank. if you've got a good strong wooden desk it might be alright. try standing on it and see how reliable it feels.

Easy way to tell...I always figure it at 10 lbs/gallon for simplicities sake...so figure abt 200 lbs...find someone who is at least 200 lbs or so, if they weigh more great and have them sit on the desk...

If it's solid wood you should be fine, if it is plywood stuffes I wouldn't even sit on it

The answer to that is extremly simple it depends how the desk is made.

Can you post a photo of the desk and what it is made from plus a few basic measurements.

I have seen some very cheap desks I would certainly not even put a computer on let alone a tank.

Remember I am a Cabinet Maker and I taught the trade for 26 years, I think that alone qualifies me to be a good judge on design a construction of furniture

if it is a kit/DIY desk from a place such as k-mart, i would be very wary. in my experience, no matter how well (or how badly) you assemble these kit/DIY desks they are very weak and have a tendancy to fall apart when you least expect it.

if it solid..with gud foundation..it might work...letting a 200 lbs person sit there might work...but...will it hold??..perhaps!!! that tank will sit there for ages..u want to make sure it will take the weight in a long haul.

sham,

Keith said it best, give us the demensions and what it is made of, and post him a picture, and he'll be able to tell you what he thinks...and of course I would still (not that I don't trust you keith, but always a good way to try it for size) find someone who weighs more than 200 lbs to sit on it, and wiggle...if they wiggle and the desk is stable you should be good but, do be safe keith did teach the how to of building and was good at it...he would know
