Id go with a betta fish, there isnt anything else i would reccomend.

I am no expert, but if you're looking for a quick response, I think, and I emphasize think, a dwarf puffer could also fit in there.

Ehh i really wouldnt do anything else in there. Dwarf puffers are big "maybe" as they create a lot of waste and a 2.5 gallon tank can have very instable water chemistry.

Your best bet is a betta or maybe a pair of african dwarf frogs...if you like invertebrates an apple snail or a few shrimp.

Here is a link for stocking small tanks. While your choice is small, there are some fish you can put in a 2.5g besides a betta. Kitten wrote it.
