I have an outbreak of brown algae in my 5 gallon betta mini-bow. There is snails in this tank, but no algae eaters. I was thinking of buying a couple ottos for him, but Im not sure if he will chase them.

Anyways, there is also this white stringy stuff that grows on this fake plant under where the filter spits the water out. I did a water change about 1 week ago and washed this stuff off the plant and its back already.

Here are a picture of the white stuff, and a picture of the brown algae. Please help figure out what it is and how do I solve the algae problem.

And as you can see on my gravel is it supposed to be white and is covered with the algae. How do i clean it up...take out a little each time and wash it?

Hi,
Brown "Algae" is actually not algae at all. Instead it is
an outbreak of diatoms. These are tiny creatures that have
a glass like shell composed of Silica. They are there
because of poor light, very little circulation, a newly
set up tank, or a old tank that needs cleaning (could be
any of the above or a combination of the above).
