That's a good idea. You could probably add more fish too. Either way it doen't matter that much because they are so similar sizes.

I wouldn't do it. Piranha get to about a foot long and they are schooling fish. 6 fish are usually what is considered a small school, so 6 twelve inch fish will not fit comfortably in a 50 gallon.

However, if you do plan on moving them in the future (when they reach about 4 inches, which is not long) then they will be fine.

Also, the 50 gallon is better since it has more surface area thus can hold more and larger fish.

Anyway, if you plan on moving them in the future to a larger tank, then yes, otherwise, NO.

I agree with Jorge, depending on the type of piranha you as there are several species, it wouldn't be the best idea to keep them in either tank. I had piranha's at one time and actually they got to be pretty boring in my opinion.

Agreed, Piranha would be a mistake in this case. They're not once in a lifetime; they're around, and someday you may have the tankspace for them, and then you can seek them out. You've got plenty of time to keep Piranha, no need to put them in a too-small tank.

Judging by the species of fish, it could go in both. And we'd have to find out what these other fish are first.

I would put the larger fish in the 50. Even though a 50 isn't as long as a 55, it is wider, and it allows for more surface area. Which means more fish and more turning space.
