well i finally convinced miranda (the sister) to give up some of her fish although she still wont let me take the goldie im taking her tetras back to a reputable fish store this week, there is a sizzortail rasbora, an albino bueno aris tetra, a columbian tetra, and a few others im gunna get her a pair of rams insted...she wants blue so im not done disscussing that she is gunna have to take better care of the tank, before she can get blues, otherwise they will die (she thinks cleaning her tank is getting the algae off the sides) but, once she leaves for college im gunna get all her fish but im not gunna sell the goldie while she is away, im gunna try and re home it in a pond or somthing, it spent the first part of its life destand to be oscar food (there was a red cap oranda and the commet) the red cap was eaten and i got the other one, and gave it to miranda, because she said she was gunna get a bigger tank, and all she did was stop cleaning it but any way, im finally breaking her!! about 20 + fish are going back to the store (most of them fry i raised) and her fish just gave birth, and she was so happy, so i have her a net, and a 1 gallon tank to hold fry in (after she finds it again) and im gunna try and fix up her tank for her, and maybe find out why she has got so much algae

I hope I have as much luck as you.

I've been working on trying to get my sister to trade in her lone 6 inch Bala in her 35 gallon tank.

Also I had a "little" success getting my brother-in-law to reduce the fish in his 150 gallon tank. He returned 2 plecos.

He still has:
1 arrowana
1 oscar
2 parrot fish
4 clown loaches
2 botia
1 large pleco
1 ghost knife
2 irredecent sharks
4 tin foils
2 balas
1 frontosa
and about another half dozen fish I can't even remember. I keep calling this the tank of death.

Good going Fishhelper288, persistance has definately paid off...now just keep at it and she'll see why she either has to do water changes on schedule, or go with something else...but with any luck the scheduled cleanings and water changes would be better

Keep up the good work, heidi

SJ that is the most amazing thing I have ever heard... not in a good way either. Tank of death is an appropriate name.

Let's see now ... this lot in a 150. Hmm.

Arowana. 500 gallons is a baseline set up for long-term housing of one of these. That onn its own is busting this tank.

Oscar. Would probably appreciate having the 150 all to itself, but is probably less than delighted at sharing it with the other inmates.

Parrot Fish. Don't know much about these but I suspect they're fairly large, and again, would probably appreciate the 150 all to themselves.

Clown Loaches. Again, would probably appreciate the 150 all to themselves, but would be looking at a 300 or bigger for long term housing.

Black Ghost Knife Fish. Yeep. 300 gallons is a baseline set up for one of these on its own.

Iridescent Sharks. Yikes. They're looking at a 500 gallon to keep them happy longer term.

Tinfoil Barbs. Should be in a shoal of 6 minimum, and at the size they reach, again 300 gallons should be a baseline set up. Plus, they're fast moving and active, like strong currents, and this is probably incompatible with the Black Ghost Knife Fish, which prefers more sedate currents.

Bala Sharks. 3 on their own would probably find a 150 a bit of a squeeze. 300 gallons would be MUCH better for them.

Frontosa. Oh joy. A Tanganyikan Cichlid that likes hard, alkaline water in with a bunch of acidophiles. I bet that is one happy Frontosa - not.

If I wanted to come up with the perfect demonstration of how not to set up an aquarium, I couldn't do much better than this. Other that perhaps tossing half a dozen Koi in there and a couple of Bichirs just to stir things up really nicely. Oh, and an Adonis Plec for good measure. Which, if anyone hasn't seen one of these beasts, is a catfish juggernaut that reaches three feet. I've seen a full sized one, and believe me, it's humungous. Not quite in the fork lift truck league for lifting, but getting there.

Even if that list were compatible in the same aquarium (and that Frontosa isn't the only fish that's out of place in there) then they'd need something like 5,000 gallons if they were to live in something approximating decent conditions. And they'd need a filter system that would be capable of turning over something like 15,000 gallons per hour.

At this point, said aquarium would take on the mantle of a civil engineering project. A 5,000 gallon aquarium would be about the same size as my living room. And would need a massively reinforced floor to take the weight - we're looking here at an object, immovable once set up, that would tip the scales at a minimum of 22 tons. This is only a little under the weight of an industrial dump truck. 30 ton dump trucks pass my house on a fairly regular basis of late, and if you put a decent amount of gravel, some big rocks and other similar decorations in a 5,000 gallon aquarium, you've got an aquatic dump truck that's nudging 30 tons. Just the glass alone would probably weigh in excess of 3 tons on its own in order to be capable of withstanding the water pressure once it is filled. As for the cost of getting an aquarium that size made using acrylic ... I could probably buy my house for the cost of this project.

I think this puts the 'Tank of Death' neatly into perspective

I believe we already get the point- the tank is overstocked .

"Yikes. They're looking at a 500 gallon to keep them happy longer term."

Try twice that, if even.
