hello all,
i was cleaning my aquarium out tonight and noticed some little worms in my filter. this is the first time ive seen them. thye look like fat blood worms and are black. does anybody know what they are. im guessing they are maggots because i see fruit flies around my tank. also is there a way to prevent this in the future. i would appreciate any help.

Planaria. Not sure how to get rid of it, I just stripped the tank and started over (it was a small tank). I'm sure someone here knows how to get rid of them.

Planaria looks like little thin wiggly white lines. I wouldn't think something similar to a fly maggot in size and dark would be planaria. Planaria shows up when you have alot of uneaten food or fish waste left in your tank.

Cut down on your feeding to about 1/3 or even less a day yes a day. do this for two weeks and then slowley bring to up to 1/2 of what you were feeding them and so on and so forth.

"Planaria looks like little thin wiggly white lines."

We had a lab experiment with live planaria and they were jet black. Kind of like this

The planaria that schools use in experiments and the ones that live in fish tanks are completely different species. The ones that live in our tanks are indeed white, not brown/black.

I took some of those white worms to my biology professor and we looked at them under a microscope. She said they weren't planaria, but another nematode. I believed her because she is head of the Biology department and her specialty is freshwater ecosystems.
