I would remove them temporarily while you did this work. That would be the best IMO.

If doing any major work on a tank it is better to remove the fish, as the water can become very dirty. You also should do a full filter cleaning as soon as the water clears. When you remove about 30% of the tank water the fish can go into that while you are doing all the aquscaping.

Bleach as last resort. Soak fo a few hours in mild solution. Scrub to remove algae. Rise with hot water. Soak in tap water with lots of conditioner.

20 Gallon Long:
Aquaclear 300
2 Bolivian Rams, Mikrogeophagus altispinosus: Gumby and Pokey

bleach will get off any kind of algae you want

when i tore down my sisters 10 gallon (that was so algae filled, you couldnt see the fish)so i dumped some bleach and water (little bleach, filled the rest of the tank with water, and let the filter run) then i took a dish tub and soaked all ordiments and fake plants, with a bit of soaking, and a bit of tooth brush scrubbing to get off the loosened algae, the tank was set up a week alter, cycled, and then later filled with fish, no deaths what so ever.

but obvously, the tank was ruinsed several times along with the gravel, and then the tank was set to run for a few days, with just water and decolorinator, later on the gravel and ordiments were replaced, then i added ammonia to the tank to cycle it, after a bit, i added a young feeder guppy to test the tank out, but only after i infered it was safe, it was safe, and then the rest of the fish were added

hth

I took all my plants out of my 55g and soaked them in bleach today to remove algae type stuff. I had to leave the fish in though because I didn't have anything to put them in. They seemed a little stressed though, but everyone is fine now. I would take them out if I ever do it again.

I was taking out some plants in my German Rams "territory" and she was not happy. She tried to attack the end of the gravel vac and almost got sucked up in it. It was so funny. She changes territory so I don't think it will bother her too much that I moved things around.

The point I am trying to make: take the fish out. They will be less stressed and more happy.
