I have three yoyo loaches in my tank and ever since I’ve got them about ¾ of a year ago I can’t imagine a tank without them. They’re absolutely adorable fish. The other day I observed some rather strange behavior from two of my yoyo loaches, their color was really strange, they had turned very pale, with only the outline of the “yoyo’s” being visible. Normally, they always have a very deep color, with the “yoyo’s” being very deep brown and the rest of the body a golden creamy color. What puzzled me even more was their behavior; the two of them were chasing each other throughout the tank, and kissing or biting each other (without damaging the other) on the back, side and stomach. Furthermore, they would sometimes come together, and squirm and vibrate while being sometimes upside down over a piece of bogwood. While I was watching, this lasted for about 2 minutes or so. I never saw any eggs, so I’m still not sure whether this was spawning behavior or not, but if it was, that would be awesome Does anyone have any information on yoyo spawning? It would be something worth looking into.

PS: I posted this here in general freshwater as the “breeding advice” section seems to be pretty much dead, with only a few posts per week. If the Moderators think this should be there, then please move the thread.

I've seen similar behavior out of my yo-yos - not the exact same, but similar with the chasing and nipping and chasing quickly in circles. I don't think it's breeding behavior though. As far as I know breeding of yo-yo loaches has been EXTREMELY rare in home aquaria, just like with clown loaches. I think that's just the way they play and interact, but I'll never say never Keep us posted.

Mine always chase each other, but i don't think they are spawning.
Just keep an eye on them & if you see something, please keep us informed.

A few people have seen what is thought to be spawning behavior but it has never resulted in eggs or fry. It's not only rare but I don't think spawning yoyo loaches has even been accomplished.

hm, I'm going to keep a cose eye on those yoyos then. Mine chase eachother all the time, but this was really something altogether different. Very similar to what is described in the piece that Jason was referring to, except that with mine two yoyos were very lightcolored for a while. Also, I may be imagining it, but it seems that the fatter one of the two is a bit thinner this morning Though that could be my imagination and wishful thinking

My dwarf botias (B. sidthimunki) do the same thing. They get all pale, chase eachother around and chew a little in the gill area. Usually they do this two by two but sometimes another one will join in. They have been doing this since well before becoming sexually mature and probably it is a hierarcy (sp?) thing. But, there are allways a but, since the largest has become a clearly sexualy mature female with eggs (she relly fills up nicely)the intensity has increased and now and then she deffinately gets thinner over night, so who knows what is going on. If you, or anyone, can confirme eggs being released it would be great to hear about it.

So here I am once more...

Sometimes fish feel the instinct to breed but there just isnt the parameter/conditions to accomplish it. so they just go through behaviour that normally occurs at these periods. i only had my yoyo's for 2 weeks but i noticed they seem to play something similar to tag chasing each other till one bites the other then he runs...

I have two yo-yo's and they do the same thing. I have seen eggs in the tank on my plants, but they usually eat them after a few days. This hasn't happened in some time, but they do love chasing each other on a daily basis. They also greet me when I come home and when I feed them. "Nate" will come right to the front of the tank and nose the glass where my finger is. "Brenda" is starting to do it too. They are wonderful fish.

Also, if you have live plants, I recommed getting a long leafed melon sword. Brenda pushes the leaves around till she makes a little home for herself and she sleeps there. My son goes nuts cause he thinks she has disappeared.

They are the best fish and so easy to keep.
