hello!
i've been doing some research on catalina gobies and have read contradicting information regarding their temperature requirements. some sources say they MUST be kept in cool water (74F or lower) and others say they will tolerate warmer temps, especially if tank-raised.

does anyone have experience keeping these fish?

After searching everywhere for days I've come to the conclusion that they are best avoided without a cool water tank. I don't have the dozens of links anymore but all the sources claiming they are capable of living in warmer water were suspect(ie trying to sell them to you) or only based on 6months of keeping one alive. All the most trustworthy sources I found said it's a lie and the gobies won't live even half their normal lifespan. Also everyone I talk to and pretty much all of the nano reef forum says they definitely can't be tank raised at normal temps and all gobies are either wild caught or were bred and raised at lower temps despite claims that the tank raised ones can live in warmer water. That's why in the end I decided to skip them and look at keeping other species.

The thing is, they may "tollerate" the warmer temps, and not show any signs of problems, at least not a first. But, do you really want to keep fish in an environment that they may be just tolerating and not be comfortable in? And, if they are just tolerating it, and not comfortable, this could lead to an early death, or an outbreak of illness and disease due to the increase of their stress levels.

I highly recommend keeping these fish at temps below 74F. And more so recommend them kept at 72F or a little lower even.

Thanks for the catch git, lol, yes I did mean below, I edited it.

I agree that they do better in cooler tanks. Even though the article says they will adapt to it I believe the correct term was used when someone said tolerate. This will in alot of instances cause stress causing the fish to be open to parasites and diseases. I keep my reef tank at 76 degrees and I`m still not going to take a chance.
