Im just starting to set up a 70G saltwater tank FOWLR prolly only a couple fish mostly want it for the LR and inverts, so im curious with all saltwater tanks is it necessary for the sump and overflow and all that crazi plumbing, or could i just get away with the protein skimmer and and the canister filter. i kinda like the idea of a sump or refugium but dont really understand all the plumbing that goes along with, im just looking for a lil bit of guidance here. thank you in advance.

Do you have a reef ready tank?

That's basically going to determine whether or not you want to plumb a sump/refugium, which shouldn't be that hard at all, especially with a predrilled tank.

The AGA kits nowadays come with basically everything you need to make it work, other than the return pump, which you'll have to pick up yourself.

I'd recommend a protein skimmer either way.

Ferrets right about the AGA kits. I really like the new AGA overflows, and their new sumps are AWESOME for a premanufactured sump. Between the two, all you need is a return pump and the plumbing to connect it to the tank plumbing.

I say Protein skimmer for any tank with LR.
