Unique Nano Fish | |
niggit Fish Addict Posts: 631 Kudos: 282 Votes: 0 Registered: 29-Jan-2003 | hello! i have a 10G sw tank that has been established for nearly a year... i had been keeping a carpenter wrasse and a firefish (as well as several snails and hermits) but they unfortunately died during a recent power outage so, i'm now looking for something unusual to restock it with (the $50 gift certificate i got for christmas is burning a hole in my pocket! haha). anyhow, i'm not really interested in the 'common' small fish (like another firefish, or watchmen gobies, etc) and would like to special order something a little special. i recently saw an article in a magazine about panda gobies... they are so cute! i also like some of the other interesting gobies, etc. what would you suggest? |

A panda or 2 would probably work but I've seen multiple species under that name. If you want something slightly more difficult the yasha haze(Stonogobiops yasha) is a colorful goby that's popular for nanos. I know a few people on nano-reef.com have breeding pairs. They'll also form relationships with shrimp which is interesting to watch. I've read they are somewhat difficult to feed though and require good water quality. Usually mentioned as an intermediate to experienced nano fish and not for beginners. |

Other options include fish like the Stonogobiops gobies, one of which Sham mentioned. A jawfish could work if you have the right sandbed for one. They need deep sand which has mixed grain sizes to build their burrows. |

Bryaninops natans, the Red Eye Goby. Here's a pic of it. Why is this a REAL "Nano Fish"? Simple - max length is just 3 cm! In fact, the entire Genus Bryaninops consists of TINY Gobies that are colourful. Many only grow to be 2.5 cm long, and so here is a fish you could have a small group of in your 10 gallon nano reef ... |
