I'm starting an 150g aquarium. I was going to have a Tang Cichlid aquarium, but have switched my mind. I'm going to have fire bellied newts. I'm going to have an anchored dry platform for them. I was wondering if I could throw some type of fish in there with them. Just wondering if anyone has done this before. The tank is going to be filled about 3/4 or more.

If there aren't any fish that will fit, is there anything else interesting?

Time for a nap YAY! I'm too tired

Thanks!
-Nick

Wow, a 150 gal. for newts? that's pretty cool. If you were feeling really ambitious, a planted paludarium setup would be fantastic. Large pieces of driftwood with bits sticking out of the water would be ideal for them.

Newts are carnivorous, so you can keep fish with them that are too small/fast for them to eat, so pretty much any of the larger tetras and up... However, newts can be timid, so you don't want to keep anything aggressive that will bully them to death, like cichlids. Rainbowfish would be ideal, Schools of large tetras like congos or black skirts (there are tons of suitable types, really) or giant danios would look fantastic. Hell, with a tank that large, you can have big schools (12+ fish each) of lots of different types. Or you could have a HUGE school of one type. Some catfish would also be good to have, though again you want to watch out for aggression and predation. A school of corys would be nice, especially one of the larger types or Brochis, or you could even get some clown loaches with a tank that big.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

Hey, having a 150g for fish is great.

You have any ideas about stocking? There are alot of possibilities for a tank that size.

I wish I could have a tank that big... oh the possibilities. A paludarium setup would have been awesome, and it's not like the newts would be walking around the house... geez, parents.

The tang cichlid community would still be awesome. With a tank that big you could probably even get a few frontosas!

Alternatively, you could have just a few large specimens like some jack dempsys (beautiful when they get large--and when they're small too for that matter) or oscars, and a big mean looking catfish (though not so large that he'll eat the cichlids).
A planted aquarium would of course be stunning, but just ask Little_Fish about the kind of work that goes into a heavily planted aquarium on that large a scale.
You could still do many schools of small fish, too. I can only imagine how cool it must look to have dozens of little tetras and small fish creating a kaleidiscope of color and movement.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

I plan on having Lamprologus Stappersi, Julidochromis Transcriptus, Altolomprologus Calvus, Cyprochromis Leptosoma, and Eretmodus Cyanostictus. Not sure on the stocking numbers. Personally, I don't like Frontosa
