Other than a betta is there anything I can keep in a 5 1/2 gallon? My son won the tank at a tricky tray. I wouldn't have bought one this small.

You could keep a small school of the smaller tetras maybe. Something like cardinals or glow lights but no more than 6-10 at a time to avoid overcrowding. Or you could try some of the shrimps like cherry or ghost shrimp if they're available in your area.

A few male guppies would be a good choice too.

Shrimp, the smaller species of applesnail, betta, a few guppies or platies, endler's livebearers, I don't really like putting schooling fish in a 5g but many fit some of the very small tetras, small gouramis-I had a 5g of sparkling gouramis or you could do 1 dwarf much like a betta, killifish-a bit more advanced to keep, dwarf puffer-need frozen food, african dwarf frogs... Some of it will depend on filtration.
