rickyz Fingerling Posts: 26 Kudos: 19 Votes: 0 Registered: 04-Oct-2005 | Hi, I have a new 55 gallon tank, and I was thinking to set it up with ballon mollies, how many can I put there. Also how many babies do they yield. Thanks, |

Going with an even ratio that would be 10females and if they have only 10fry their first drop that would be 100 more mollies. Granted some will be eaten but you can see how such numbers could overstock a 55 in a matter of a few months. It's also better to have more females than males when keeping a mixed gender of livebearers in a tank which only increases the potential population explosion. Best to never fully stock a tank right off with livebearers. I would stick with 10 or less and either get a fish that likes to eat fry such as gouramis or make sure there is a store that will take them every month before the fry become old enough to bear fry themselves. Chances are you'll still end up keeping a few here and there. You can get yourself into quite a dilema if you don't plan ahead when keeping livebearers. |

I've seen arguments for both sides (I personally don't believe they do). But the people who say they change sex also say if the female has given birth before, she won't change sex afterwards. To be on the safe side, buy some pregnant females and donate/sell the babies to a LFS. Good luck with the Mollies. |
