Hi, I have a new 55 gallon tank, and I was thinking to set it up with ballon mollies, how many can I put there. Also how many babies do they yield.

Thanks,

what else do you plan on adding?

but i would go with 6-8 mollies, and the other fish(given there are any) will take care of overpopulation.

Well Balloon mollies are very e to dropsy. They are small and many will be able to be housed, atleast 20 (excluding fry). They do not produce massive amounts of fry about 30 tops. They are very fun fish to watch.

I don't think I'd add 20 of any common livebearer to a 55g irregardless of size. Going with an even ratio that would be 10females and if they have only 10fry their first drop that would be 100 more mollies. Granted some will be eaten but you can see how such numbers could overstock a 55 in a matter of a few months. It's also better to have more females than males when keeping a mixed gender of livebearers in a tank which only increases the potential population explosion. Best to never fully stock a tank right off with livebearers. I would stick with 10 or less and either get a fish that likes to eat fry such as gouramis or make sure there is a store that will take them every month before the fry become old enough to bear fry themselves. Chances are you'll still end up keeping a few here and there. You can get yourself into quite a dilema if you don't plan ahead when keeping livebearers.

You can also be carefull and buy female only balloon mollys
or only MAle balloon mollys but still i'd prefer to bring home the female coz they're more rounder and more funny to look at

With 20 all female you'd still have to worry about fry, plus occasionally in an all female enviornment some may change sex (Some frogs do that too) Anyway, I'd do this:

3x Male Mollies
6x Female Mollies
1x Centerpiece Fish
1x Bottom Feeder like a BN plec or a Rubber Lipped Plec

Inky

Whether or not they change sex is still up to debate. I've seen arguments for both sides (I personally don't believe they do). But the people who say they change sex also say if the female has given birth before, she won't change sex afterwards. To be on the safe side, buy some pregnant females and donate/sell the babies to a LFS. Good luck with the Mollies.

I have found out that labrynth fish added to a livebearer tank will help keep the population under control. I used paradise fish

I've got a fever... and the only prescription... is more cowbell!
