Providing you have a purpose for the fish, it doesn't matter.

Breeding very fancy line bred pure fancy strains to pet shop fish of unknown parentage would be considered a bit counter-productive and might upset serious breeders, but providing you end up with healthy fish that you have a purpose for, I don't think anyone could really fault you.

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett

frowned upon because you are "dirtying up the genetic purity"

if you want to breed then why dont you just invest in a good healthy stock, feeders tend to alwasy carry disease!

as long as you plan to use them yourself then you are fine (ie more feeders etc) but if you sell them then you could be at faiult for dirtying genetic purity with a future person trying to breed for geneti purity (although if they were they wouldnt be buying for an unaccredited breeder or an LFS)

try finding a good breeder or try endlers
try not to cross breed though! and try to selectively breed for the coloring and donot allow the poor quality ones to breed with the high quality to eliminate crossing and degradation.

hmm. VERY good to know.. .IM not sure if I really want to breed them though as none of our LFS or LPS will take home bred fish! I worry that eventually I would have a huge abundance of guppies and no where for them to go!

thanks for all the advice.. my friend is currently breeding feeders and trying to dump them off on me (as she now has too many!), but I'm not sure I'll do it unless my fiance lets me get a 6th tank!
