| For cryin out loud - MORE babies! | |
platymom![]() Small Fry Posts: 6 Kudos: 3 Votes: 0 Registered: 31-Jan-2006 | OMG.... I'm so excited to get my new 20 up to fish quality. I just took out 5 fry from my 10 and put them in there. The fry were born on January 15th and at least 15 survived and are flourishing. How I didn't notice MORE BABIES in my 10 I'll never understand. I only now know because my two adults were behaving strangely and chasing something - more fry! One is being rather aggressive. At this point I'm a bit weary with babies and would like any and all suggestions. Since my female (the most aggressive/curious) is chasing, should I move both adults to my 20 and leave the new fry there? They at least have several plants (one nice and bushy) to hide in, but they are still being harrassed. Anyone want free fish? ![]() |

I leave fry in the tank with the adults, this may seem mean but it stops over population...usually only one or two survive. ___________________________________________ If at first you DO succeed, try not to look astonished. |

I may give a batch of babies away if I can find a home for them. I kept my last fry seperated for a couple of weeks then set them free and had minimal to no trouble. I'm a bit more nervous about these since my female found it fun to harass them ![]() Maybe a week of babying them and I'll set them free as well (moved about 25 fry to the nursery since my original post). Stops overpopulation? Sounds like a plan! |

Don't you just LOVE those babies??? - BUT you soon find you only have so much room and so much time don't you???? About a year or so ago, I ended up taking well over a 100 juveniles to my lfs - who were more than happy to take them off my hands since I simply didn't charge them! ESPECIALLY since they were so healthy and pretty!!! Every time I'd see a baby, I'd scoop it out and place it in a safer environment... But in a small home, all of the fish tanks I had going were simply too much for me to handle (at that time I had my 55 gal; 20 gal; and 12 2.5 Minibows!)... Soooo - this past year I've reduced my stock considerably, and kind of adopted the attitude of what will be will be... Still have babies that make it to adulthood - but definitely in lesser quantity... It was hard at first - knowing that the babies were being culled by cannibilism , but eventually I came around to accepting the what will be will be lifestyle.....Because I use glass discs rather than gravel, sand, etc... my husband and I are delighted to see the surviving babies move up and down out of harm's way to eat... and when finally large enough to come out in the open and stay - still have the pleasure of seeing them grow up! (Of course it also doesn't hurt that I've turned my 55 gal tank into a completely tranquil tank (tetras & platys for the most part)! So whether you separate all the males and females to control population - at least you've had the sheer pleasure of the babies! (Just remember, live bearing females can store sperm - so you might have additional births even after separating!)To thine own self be true... |
