the way i can tell is when the female will generally spend alot of time on the top of the tank and not move alot. Kinda like hovering and swimming with he tail dragging. Or below the body. She will breathe fast and wiggle from time to time. Thats when the sign i look for when i put them in a breeding trap.

Welcome to FP

The females will start to act strangely, as mentioned by chris. You will see them getting fat, and develop a dark, sometimes black region just in aft of the pectoral fins. (basically the rear portion of her 'belly'). This black spot is actually your little baby guppies eyes' blending together. She'll get real cranky, start staying off by herself and attempting to find a spot to deliver. She'll look for cover behind rocks/plant/ornament and chase anyone who comes near. Once she starts exhibiting that behaviour, she's about ready to pop.

Good luck!
Tim

You can also look for a change in the shape of her body where the vent is that the babies come out of. It kind of squares off a little, the underside of her body doesn't look as streamlined as it used to and the vent is more noticable.
