What is the purpose of the biowheel in larger filters like my Penguin 200 for a 50 gallon tank?

Hi,
The "biowheel" is a "paddle wheel" generally with a rough surface on each "paddle." The paddles and the roughened surface adds surface area to the filter for nitrifcation bacterial colonies to attach to. It effectively increases the fitration capacity of the filter.

If you look closely at a municipal filtration system, you will find that we use the exact same procedures in our aquariums (with the exception of the injection of chlorine and chloramine). They used layers of sand and gravel, they use activated charcoal, they bubble (percolate) air through the "soup," etc. Our aquariums mimic those processes at a micro scale.
