I have a 150g with a rainbow fluidized bed filter. How often should I change the media?

Hi,
In reading this http://www.petfish.net/kb/entry/6/744/?PHPSESSID=6a98e9e6f1103e023523800cb34a93e9
and other articles, it seems that the medium (sand)
does not need to be changed unless it compacts in the
bottom of the filter. The grains are kept in constant
motion and clean themselves as they brush against each
other. Remember this is a biological filter and is not
intended to remove particles in suspension. In fact
pieces of leaves and large detritus could clog the filter
preventing it from working correctly.

These filters need to be prefiltered so that the water
is relatively free from detritus and the bacterial colonies
on each grain do their thing for the nitrogen cycle. The
big stuff should be mechanically filtered out with a
separate filter.
