The grains are kept in constant motion and clean themselves as they brush against each other. Remember this is a biological filter and is not intended to remove particles in suspension. In fact pieces of leaves and large detritus could clog the filter preventing it from working correctly. These filters need to be prefiltered so that the water is relatively free from detritus and the bacterial colonies on each grain do their thing for the nitrogen cycle.
