Just a quick question, due to too many escaping shrimp and need for extra light I'm making a hood for my tank out of some old shelves and am almost ready to finish it. I was wondering if anyone knows what kind of varnish/wax would be good as I don't want to kill my fish with anything too toxic!?

best thing i can say. is to search on your search engine of choise and search for DIY hoods and see what comes up. i search on DIY stuff for other things and have seen many articles on hood making also

Fish tanks are an expensive addiction

I have used a waterbase polyurethane on two hoods that I have built. The trick is the cure time, give the finish time to dry and gas off. Three coats! No wax, varnish or shellac! good luck.

Haven't even thought of polyurethane, I'll look into it. All the internet searches I've done have given really good advise on building but none on finishing
