I purchased 3 gauramis for my 72 gal tank and noticed that one had mouth fungus.I went ahead & treated it with MElafix but it only relieved it. I decided to make a hospital tank and I put all of them in it, Now they all have mouth fungus!!! Obviously the Melafix DIDNOT work!! Can anyone help me with some advice on what to use and how to treat? ((** IT is strange to me that my older gauramis did not seem affected by this fungus.Just in case I went ahead & treated both tanks. I will now use my hospital tank for new fish!!**))

OK, for starters, unless you know the fish has a certain illness, don't treat it for anything. Over medicated non-sick fish can lead to he illnesses developing soem resistance, or atleast this is what i've been lead to believe. Also, if the fish aren't showing visible signs of the illness, don't stick them in with the sick fish. They'll be guaranteed to pick it up if you do.
I had a betta with mouth fungus once and I just used salt, melafix and a triple sulfa med and it cleared up.

I know about the over med the fish but when I put the other fish in with the sick fish they were showing redness around their mouths. I have a bala shark that I put in the hospital tank because it was not acting well. If I dont treat my big tank for the fungus will my other fish still be able to contract it? Or they have to get it from the sick fish? This might b a stupid question but watnted to make sure. Will it still be in the tank, even if they show no signs of it-LIKE the parasite ICH)??? One more question that does not pertain to this.... My problems-Ich & mouth fungus,If I remove these I think I'll be fine.
BUT I have a dwark gaurami in my big tank that is acting fine but has a gash in her tail. Its not red, bloating, etc. It just looks like she ran across a rock or something and cut It smoothly down the center. Should I treat things such as this or is it a beginning of fin rot??

Melafix, an anticeptic, is useless for mouth fungus, a white or gray cotton-like growth on the mouth...

Over the counter fungus meds should be dosed before the fungus takes over. Unable to eat the fish starves to death.
