Yes, a sad tale to share. My beloved blue female guppy, bearer of many many young, wife to the Samurai Guppy, is on her way to passing out of my life.
She was my first female guppy, and has been with me since December of last year. She was already approx. 10-12 months old when I got her, I could tell due to her large size. She has spawned me many beautiful babies, including my pride and joy, a cross between a blue and a tuxedo, a blonde headed male with a deep blue body and a sky blue tail.
Alas, her fruitful life was shortened with the recent birth of not 1, not 10, but 100 (and some) baby guppies.
Following this dramatic and relatively short birthing (around 4 hours for all babies! ), she became winded, tired, and spent several days resting in my 90g away from the boys. I am afraid this birthing was too hard on her old bones, as now she has become a complete U shape, cannot eat, and swims nose down, but is still struggling so hard to stay alive. Today I went and purchased a bottle of clove oil, as I am saddened of watching her struggle so hard to live with a problem Im afraid she just wont shake off. I think she may have burst her swim bladder when birthing, I do not know. As I said she is bent almost in half, apparently not of her own will, and is swimming only nose down, no matter how hard she tries.
Does anyone think she stands a chance, she has been like this for about 4 days now, maybe 6. Yesterday her illness seemed better, as she swam almost normally, but bent, for a couple of hours with her friends and family. Should I hold out and wait for her to pass on her own? Or should I euthanise the poor girl? I have her in the breeder trap right now, as I was too sad watching her nose down on the gravel fighting so hard to swim.
I will be very saddened by her loss, but I feel so grateful for the experience and time I have had with her, and will always see her in the tiny faces of her 100+ new babies, and her 50+ older young.
I just hope when she does pass, my Old Blue Mama goes in peace.

Can you see anyway of her ecovering? If you can don`t give up and treat it with the most appropriate medication you can find, if you don`t then I am afraid you should euthanise as it would be better than seeing her struggle

I dont know perky, its hard to tell, just the day before yesterday I looked in at her, she was nose down on the gravel beatin her fins and going nowhere. I thought Oh gee, shes gonna be dead soon. 4 hours later I look in to try and find her, no luck on the bottom shes not there, I look up and there she is swimming at the top with the rest of the guppies and platies. Yesterday, back on the bottom nose down. I fished her out into the breeder net, and gently let her rest in my hand while I gave her some food, but she wouldnt take any, she just kept trying, then spitting it out. *sigh*. I dont know what to treat her for or with. I am treating with melafix, but it doesnt seem to be making a difference. What do you treat a guppy who had too many babies with? I dont even know whats really wrong with her. When she first had her babies, she was wobbling back and forth after, really unbalanced, but was eating and swimming fine, a few days later, totally bent in half like a U tail to nose, but still swimming fine. Now nose down in the gravel, but in a breeder trap right now.
Maybe I will wait a few more days and see if she gets worse or better, or if there is any advice on this condition, someone will pipe up im sure.

I think you will get some good advice in the hospital forum on treatment so I will move you over there.

Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. That way you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Thanks Lindy.
Its ok though, today my Big Blue Mama Guppy was hardly moving, and passed away around 4 pm pacific standard time.
It is sure a crusher when a fish you are really attached to dies. Its really amazing how easily one can get attached to the little finny critters.
RIP Blue Mama.

I'm sure she had a great life, it sounds like you took great care of her. And like TeeBee said, you did all that you could for her.
RIP BlueMama
