Slight developement.....have just this monute checked the tank and found my siamese algae eater stuck to the angel fishes head, trying to eat him. Could this have been the cuplrit all along? I have whisked the algae eater out. What's the quickest and most humane way to euthanase? (I can't give him away and my Q tank is being used). |

Its kind of a 'catch 22' The longer you dose meds for the worse and longer the ammonia spike will go but the shorter time you leave them in the worse it is for the angel. Isolate the angel if you have a Q-tank then use that if you dont Put some gravel with a bucket and a airstone and dose heavily with meds for a short time. About adjusting the PH i was a little off in my estimate angels prefer a max of 8.0 so yours isn't that high, seeing as they areused to it I wouldn't change it untill you have the illness sorted out. A changeing PH is worse then a stable one thats of a few points. |

Have treated for fin rot but like the idea of switching tank around. Will commence more regular water changes in seven days according to meds that I have put in. As for PH, Angel Fish has lived happily in 8.5 for about nine months. How would I reduce it? |

This would be stressing him and causing him to get sick. Also if he is being bullied his fins have probably been nipped and this would also cause the finrot. If you sort out the bullying and the PH add some meds they should be fine. About reducing ammoina levels, either put some fish in another tank or just wait it out. If the tank is new it is probably still cycling, Its a good sign you already have nitrItes but things will probably get worse before they get better. Also by adding meds you will be prolonging the cycle unfortunately you have to choose. If it was my choice i would take the sick angel back and not dose with meds, but thats just me. ~Scott |

The raise in ammonia could have to do with adding 4 fish in one weekend, or it could be that you are still cycling your tank...how long has it been set up? Either way do a 10-20% water change I'd say twice a week, say Wednesday and Sunday, or whatever fits your schedule best. And keep an eye on your water parameters... Also slow down on the amount you are feeding the fish, and I'd leave the lights out for a day or two, to help reduce the stress...you could also rearrange your decorations and thus it will cause the fish to lose their territories, and have to redevelope them...
