It's kinda hard to tell because he has naturally dark coloring. It could be either one. If I was would in your position, I would get some bettamax and treat him as it says on the box....and see if it gets any better.

Better be safe than sorry.

He's pretty though.

Bettamax...isnt that half dose melafix?

what im worried about is the bacteria in the tank. i dont wanna kill everything and have to recycle it. is there a food i can feed him? he loves to eat lol. or a med that wont effect the bacteria in the tank?

My bettas had this also & I used Melafix & water conditioner.Fixed the problem.I always thought it was my hard water,But not sure....

I used 1/2 the dosage of Melafix a few times & it made a slow recovery. He was originally in my 72 gl then I moved to my hospital tank to treat. It's been about 6 mths & now he's perfect!

No, you're thinking of BettaFix. (the ever crappy "tea" water medication.)

I've had bad cases of fin rot in fish I've brought home from the LFS and Bettamax cleared it up very well.

I have only used Melafix on my fish. I dont know the difference in the two meds but Melafix worked great with my betta & his torn fins. It has saved me lots of times, although alittle costly.

okay from what you told me your 10gal tank has the betta w/ snails and african frog. temp 76 and 25% water changes.
Question how long has the tank been set up? How many frogs and snails do u have in the tank and what is the filter you are using?
Ok the snails shouldn't be a cocern but the frogs might how big are the frogs?. How much do you feed the fish daily?
I would up the temp to 80 and add 2 tsp of salt disolve it before adding to tank. and do 50% water changes every other day and repeat salt

the tanks been setup for atleast 6 months with out problems at all...ever. the ADFs are like 1-2 inches...and its not them goign for the betta. they been in the tank as long as him and only chaseing going on is the betta after the frogs.

i feed him 3 betta pellets once a day. and the frogs get a pinch of thier little pellets after lights out. anythign they dont eat the snails are happy to.

as far as salt is concerned thats not happening. as far as i know salt and snails dont mix.

about the melafix/bettafix, i know these 2 meds fix fins but they dont do much for curing fin rot. what can i use to treat the fin rot to stop it from continueing?

will bettamax effect my bacteria colonies?

Bettamax will wipe them out completely, its an antibiotic.

That to me looks like either fin-biting that has become slightly infected, or rot.

A tear wouldn't take off the fin rays just the webbing. On the off chance that it did, you would see it on the bottom of the tank... unless the snails got it

Start with melafix/pimafix (preferably both, i have found Pimafix better) if that doesn't work, isolate the fish and dose with antibiotics (bettamax, erythromycin, Furan2, JFE)

Bettas are suckers for fin rot, i think they like the attention Let us know if it keeps going, I have some other combos and meds to try.

For now, Melafix/Pimafix, super-clean water, i'd add a small amount of salt, but thats up to you. and the good food, but not live, as at the moment, its too riskyto add more possible pathogens. Frozen or manufactured

might well take them out, the snails are pretty much a cert, the frogs will absorb it through the skin, as far as i know, its toxic to amphibians at a much lower level than fish.

grab a suction cup and a 2L coke bottle. attach coke bottle to said suction cup. put in tank to contain betta and treat betta in said coke bottle. Instant-ish quarrantine tank Make sure it sticks, or you are in trouble. pop a pot under it or something.
