I had a betta with a problem like that. The stomach got larger and larger... After some time, he just spent the day side-standing on the gravel.

The swim bladder gets affected by this, and while fish can't control their bladder, the up and down movements are not controlled and he rested like that.

I thought the problems was caused because mistreatment, he was left in a small glass container with so much rotten food and no water changes.

........

Treat your fish well, i think that's inoperable but i really hope Im wrong about a tumor. Good luck!

It looks like a tumour to me too Tanks (<-- points out pun )

I'm really sorry, but IMO it doesn't look treatable. On the up side, it shouldn't be contagious either so there is no need to keep her isolated to protect the other fish. If she needs it to stay able to eat and manouvre, that is fine

If the growth does not increase in size too fast or too much, she will be quite able to live a normal life

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett

Lisa,
The possibility of it being a tumor has crossed my mind as well, as it is a strange little bulgde on one side. She has had it for a while -- no real change in the past week. She does not seem to be in pain, eating OK -- at least so far.
Thanks for you reply.

Two tanks :

First of all, I hope your husband gets better soon. It must be hard on you, so we can all do the best we can to figure this out...

Now, I'd hate to say it, but it just looks like a tumor. Is she in pain? Any visible discomfort? How long has it been there for? She's eating fine?

All questions that have answers. But I suspect, if she seems normal, and she's had it for a while, she may be fine with it. Or it could be a cyst, or something like that. with fish it is so difficult to figure out what is going on in their heads

Hope that helps a little...

Call, thank you for posting the picture for Keith and Keith, I thank you for sending it to Call. It is wonderful to find such nice people willing to help with a problem. With a sick husband (stoke in Febuary) and dog, (she is 16 and a half)and has not been well, finding someone to help with a fish problem is a God send!
Thanks again for your kindness!
Now if only someone can figure out what the problem is?

Thank you for posting the picture. I changed her water today, and she is still eating and swimming around fine. I did compare her to my other female bettas, however, and it seem to me that her whole body is rather swollen. She seems to come out to an angle from her head out, then tapers back down at the base of her tail. The right side sticks out more than her left, but her left side is swollen out just a bit also. Her scales do not stick out, but could it be dropsy or constipation? There was barely any poop in her bowl when I cleaned it.
I used bottled water:
PH: 7:0
Ammonia: 0
Nitrates: 0

Thank you for the pun Callatya. It was cute!
I did some research on tumors in fish. Sometimes they are benign and the fish can live out its life pretty happily but if it is cancerous, I will have to consider humainely ending her suffering.
Right now she is still swimming normally, but has not been eating that well. It really is looking more and more like a tumor.
Her water is clean, she has her own bowl and she is happy. Another female, older than this one, is still doing fine.
Thank you Sharpix for your input.
I will just hope for the best.

When you hit file "Save As.." you have to save it as a jpg or jpeg and you might have to save it as a copy.

Keith,
This stupid photo shop program gives me no options for saving the photo of the fish to disk, etc. so I can't put it on one of the sites you mentioned. The digital camera took some good pictures of her, too bad. I guess the fish store is my only option. Thanks anyway.

Keith,
Thanks for the information. My camera needed to be charged, not used in a while, but I will give it a try.
My husband had a stroke in Feb. and is in rehab, etc. so it may take me a few days. So far, Kitty Rose, is none the worse.
If I can't get the picture to come out, I will try your other suggestion about taking her to one of the Local Fish Stores.
I will let you know one way or the other. I wonder if epsons salts might help?

The fish is in a one and a half gallon hex (acrilic) tank -- the kind Wal Mart sells, but without the light or filter. It says two gallons, but actually only holds one and a half. I had been using regular tap water, filtered, but Lagrange flushed the lines a while back -- the PH was 6.0 and the ammonia was 0.50, so I had to scramble to go get bottled water -- which I have used ever since. I lost one of my other female bettas from this adventure, but the others are fine.
I have a digial camera, but don't know how I would post the picture. She is pretty active, but I will try.
Thanks!

To be honest I have no idea what it is or caused it. Here are two suggestions take several photos or get some to do it for you using the Macro setting to get a good close up and accurate photo. Take the fish to your local LFS if that is possible.

Also more info re tank/container size and what is in the tank as well as water conditions. Do you have any other fish with the Betta if so what and how many.

Sorry this is the best I can do to assist you.

My blue female betta, Kitty Rose, has developed a strange sort of bump / lump on her right side, half way between her head and tail. Except for standing out from her body about 1/8 inch and about the same size around, she looks perfectly fine (no outstanding scales, redness, etc.). Unfortunately, it seems to have grown larger in the past two weeks than from when I first noticed it.
I have never encountered anything like this before. Except for the strange bump, she is eating and swimming normaly.
Last week, however, she did release a lot little white things that I am assuming to be eggs. She is in a two gallon, heated bowl.
Any advice will be appreciated.
