What have you guys used to repair the fins of male bettas. I'm new to this whole tank w/out a filter and I just dont know how to go about trying to heal my new pet. Is there something that makes bettamax ideal for bettas? or is it just a marketing scheme to make money? Thanks!

I am no expert on fish medicine, and I think Bettamax is actually considered to be a very generic, and weak medicine. BUT, I had a VERY sick betta, that was so close to death, he was basically bent in half, and floatin on his side at the surface, but he was still breathing. I added BettaMax, and he slowly recovered! He lived alomost 2 years after that, and acted perfectly fine. So I have to give the stuff props. It certainly worked for me.

OK, you are getting bettaFIX and bettaMAX confused.

BettaFIX is a useful medication, but basically, its a watered down melafix.

BettaMAX is a fairly strong antibiotic, not usually good for a first attempt at healing. You really shouldnt start with the 'big guns' for something simple.

One thing you should keep in mind is that bettaMAX is going to become very rare as the manufacturer has gone out of business.

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett

Bettamax is also a fungal and vitamin preparation...and as Calla said, if you have some save it for when you really need it as they are not making it anymore. This said... when I bring home a new betta who was kept in questionable conditions I treat him with bettaMax. I have 8 boxes of it stashed away

For repair of fins which were torn and not diseased I use MelaFix BUT in a weaker concentration than the directions, also I use 1/2 tsp of aqua salt per gallon.

What is all the concern over treating bettas with melafix? I use it every time I have an injured betta and I'll sometimes dose it once when I do waterchanges if they look like they might be a little roughed up. I use the full concentration, sometimes even more at 1 mL/gallon. Accoring to the directions on the bottle that's double what I should be using and I haven't had any problems. Why all the fuss???
