 | Black Skirt Tetra Question |
olmstead Small Fry Posts: 9 Kudos: 10 Votes: 0 Registered: 05-Jan-2005 | I have 4 Black Skirt Tetras and a Gold Gourami in a 10 Gallon tank. The Gourami stays away from the Black Skirt so I don't think its the problem. Anyways on the Black Skirts their tails are starting to fall apart, and they are devolping white spots. I took my water into petco and they told me its not the water everything is fine with the water. What do you think I should do? What are some good ways to handle this? Thank You! |

They might be beating up on each other. They are also schoolers and should be kept in groups of 6. But I would not advise putting 2 more in a 10. It could also be fin/tail rot. When you say the fish are getting white spots. Could you be a little more desc Does it look like fuzz or salt, ect ect. For the fins I would treat with Melafix. You might want to go ahead and treat with a mix of Melafix and Premifix. Both are made to work together and do a pretty good job of clearing up fungus problems. |

Babelfish         Administrator Small Fry with Ketchup Posts: 6833 Kudos: 8324 Votes: 1570 Registered: 17-Apr-2003    | If it looks like salt it's most likely ich. Treat with ich meds ASAP. Raising the temp will speed up the life cycle of the parasite but should be done only after you have added the medication. Be sure to follow the directions exactly, remove all carbon, dose for the alloted time ect. The stage in which ich is treatable is actually after it has fallen off the fish. Which is why many people think they've treated it and stop medicating too early then have it come back in a week. ^_^ [hr width='40%'] It only hurts when I breathe"  |

Stress more often than not will lead to the fish weakening to the point where the ich parasite can attack the fish. IMO the most common cause of ich in fish is a temperature fluctuation. Usually seen when someone runs a tank without a heater and the temp drops @night. Other reasons are a rushed acclimation or equiptment failure. ^_^ [hr width='40%'] It only hurts when I breathe" |
