Last night I unfortunately found that one of my Panda Cories had died.

Strangely, it looked like the left side of his body was bruised up and I'm wondering if this should be something I should be very concerned about...?

There was a huge bruised spot infront (and slightly down) from his gills, a smaller spot a little behind his gills and a third tiny spot on his anal fin.

Late last week I did my monthly pull of the tank decorations for cleaning, and I am so upset at the fact that the bruising could be from me accidentally hitting him with one of the stones/decorations... I tried to be as careful as possible, but I can't say that I am 100% sure I didn't hit anyone.

Basically I just wanted to see if this bruising could be signs of any kind of disease that I should be worried about or anything like that (for the safety of my other fish who shared the tank). He was in with other Pandas, a school of Harlies and two Cherry Barbs, so I don't think he was attacked or anything.

Any comments would be appreciated. Thank you.

I think I would be looking elsewhere as it would have had a very strong knock to get a bruise and if it did there would be signs of external damage as well, as you stated it would have been hit by one of your tank decorations.

I agree with Keith on this. Not to mention Pandas are pretty quick, so the likelyhood you hit one and bruised him are unlikely. Let's start with the basics. What size tank are they in? Ph levels, Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate levels. Let's start there. Also how many Pandas do you have?

I have a 20 gallon (tall) tank. Ammonia/Nitrite both at zero. Nitrate is between 10-20. Tank temperature is 75 degrees. pH is 7.5. The tank is the home of 6 Harlies, 2 Cherry Barbs and 6 Pandas.

After getting three new Pandas on Saturday, I unfortunately found one of the new arrivals dead just minutes ago. He too had some signs of bruising/blood in areas under and to the sides of his gills. Nothing like the Panda I found earlier in the week though. Is this spotting of blood just something that happens when the Panda dies or is it something I should be really concerned about?

we bought 4 pandas on thursday evening, this morning (sat) we found one of ours dead. we looked at him and he looked as though he has a bruise on one side. we wondered if he had been hurt when caught at lfs. we took him back today and got a free replacement, plus bought another who was on his own in the tank. sounds very simlar tho

Sounds like the Melenestius cory that I just lost. It seems as though he died from high nitrate levels (20 ppm) from what I was told and, like your cories, had no signs of external damage. There could have been something in the water irritating his gills so badly that he couldn't breath, and he died of asphyxiation.
