Hi,
I was just wondering if there is anything I can do to help the fish. I have a cichlid that lost an eye, and they eye is swelling, 1/2 white 1/2 red. It also looks very puffy. Is there any sort of medication I should apply directly on the wound, or in the water? Anything else I should do? Any advice is appreciated.

Keep checking for fungus or infection - I would add some melafix to the water to try and prevent any fungus or infection.

HTH a little,
Stella

I'd just keep your water quality VERY high. That means more regular water changes and much closer monitoring of the tank parameters. Adding some Melafix wont hurt, but i'd avoid it if you can and let him self heal. My guys are constantly taking chunks out of themselves, as they like to dig around the drfitwood in the tank and try to move it... and all i do is a water change at the sign of injury, then monitor the tank parameters. They always heal up well.

PS: My idea of ideal tank parameters is:

Ammonia = 0ppm
Nitrite = 0ppm
Nitrate = <5ppm

Thanks for the tips. My tank conditions are pretty good, ammonia 0, nitrites 0, nitrates 10.

It looks very swollen (does this mean infection?) as in its puffing up and a deep pink color. He still eats but hides in the corner most of the day. Is there anything I should do to decrease the swelling? Would melafix help it? I was thinking of moving him to his own tank and dosing it with melafix
