Congo Breathing Heavily | |
zachf92 Big Fish Posts: 343 Kudos: 255 Votes: 233 Registered: 31-Dec-2005 | my congo tetra is breathing heavily and i need to know what it is and if their is a cure. besides loss of appetite and not schooling, there are no other symptoms. my parameters are good, and all my other fish are healthy and showing no signs of this. please help |

I don't mean to mean to insult you, but one person's "good" is another person's running around and screaming like a toddler after one coffee with four sugars kind of "bad", to use an exaggerated example. How long have you noticed the fish acting like this? Maybe it has been getting picked on, or just feels out of sorts. You might just try a water change to see if that perks the fish up, often a water change will help clear up a problem by itself. When was the last time you did one? |

zachf92 Big Fish Posts: 343 Kudos: 255 Votes: 233 Registered: 31-Dec-2005 | well, now my congo is dead the only reason i wasnt specific on my parameters is because all my other fish are healthy, including my other 2 congos. also, i need to get a nitrate and nitrite tester, but i know theyre both low. although what i do know is that my ph is 7.0 and my ammonia is 0. the last time i did a water change was a week ago (20%) and im doing another one today. and if you wanted to know, i have plenty of surface agitation |

Any measurable nitrite in a tank is enough to sicken and even kill fish. If I'm not mistaken, it can also cause affected fish to breathe heavily since it interferes with their respiration. If you could get your water tested to verify, that would be great. |
