Hey folks,

I just got back from vacation a week ago to find one of my cory's tails almost gone. The only thing left basically is the "v", that being the top and bottom of the tail. Water parameters check out but dosing a 75 gallon tank with Melafix doesn't seem to be working. On Monday I am picking up a 10 gallon tank to set up as a QT. Any other suggestions for medication other then Melafix? Also, I had a 29 gallon I was using as a QT before, and when I medicated cories I always put two in there, the one that was "sick" and a healthy buddy to keep them company. Is that OK to do, or am I better off justing moving the sick one?

a 10 makes a great sick bay...and I don't think it would harm the other cory, and would at least keep the spirits up of the sick one, you are buying melafix from the pond section aren't you? It is the same stuff, cheaper and you have to count less because it is merely stronger...if not it's called pond melafix, there is something else, that you can combine with melafix to help treat serious problems but i'd hold off on it, that and I can't think of the namesomething else made by melafix %^&*fix, someone else will be able to pull it out of their brains, mine is still at work:%)when i remember i'll report back...

Best of luck, heidi michelle

Pimafix is sometimes suggested ....made by the same company...believe that's what heidi was suggesting.

Melafix IME isn't enough to deal with finrot if thats what it is and not nipping by suddenly nipping tankmates. You may want to look for Jungle labs fungus clear tank buddies. It'll handle both bacterial and fungal finrot. Melafix after treatment may help with regrowth.

Just figured I give a quick update on my "tailless" cory. He and buddy have been in my new 10 gallon hex quarantine tank for a couple weeks now. I've been using Melafix and there has been some regrowth of the tail. Him & his buddy are quitte active constantly exploring. My only worry with the tank is that ever since I set it up it's been cloudy. I'm not sure if that has to do with the medication or not. I took all the tank water from my 75 gallon which the two were housed in & also two large scoops of gravel. Unfortunately my plan for the filter went down the tubes when I realized the cycled filter I was going to use off a set up tank wouldn't fit the hex. I did buy a new filter online and that too was a little big. So I'm going to eventually have to use a much smaller filter.

BTW, the reason I got the hex and not a regular 10 gallon was twofold; space (don't have any left with 4 tanks) and a great price ($99 hex tank, stand & light).

Thanks for the update on the little guy, and glad he has buddy to keep him company...better to have a friend around even when you are sick, than to be alone

The reason to the cloudiness in the tank is going to be the fact that the tank is more than likely cycling, thus causing the cloudiness...Even though you did add gravel and water from a tank that has been cycled, it still sometimes happens...while other times you cycle and didn't even notice:%)Stop by your lfs or lps and pick up some cycle, or other brand of liquid that will help cycle the tank a little faster if you wish...just be sure to keep an eye on the water parameters, because if they go off in the wrong directions the little corries health will suffer

With the 10 gallon and knowing that it is probably cycling as a sick bay I would go ahead and leave the guys in there, maybe add a bit more gravel if you want, and remove 1 gallon of water a day, replacing it with fresh water...this will help to keep the water parameters in good shape and it will help keep the water at its best for the little guys to enjoy...

And if you are up for a little mayhem in the 10 gallon set up an airstone with an airpump and watch your little guys play in the bubbles...always interesting and hilarious to watch...

Take care, hml
